1990 Luzon Earthquake
July 16, 1990, Monday. Intramuros, Manila
It was the feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Our school celebrated the feast with scapulars. Classes were only held half day.
In the afternoon, after merienda, my sister and and I were engaged in a coloring book.
Then someone said, "Lumilindol." I looked at the big Rosary that was hanging on the wall. It was shaking tremendously. Soon, the electricity in the building of the Palacio del Gobernador was cut off. I heard bottles of softdrinks breaking, as my parents' officamate also had a sari-sari store. Our mother told us yo get under her table. We prayed the Hail Mary loudly. We were scared.
After a while, my father arrived. He picked up my sister and carried her. I followed. From the 6th floor, we went down the building. Fortunately, the stairwell was lighted by the emergency lamps. As we were rushing down, my blue crayon got loose from my fingera. I wanted to stop and look for it, but my father said no.
We stayed outside the building as Plaza Romas was just in front. We waited for out mother. I don't recall how long but we were safe and together.
After a few day, I looked for my crayon. I did not find it.
