Simple Examples of the Red Tape

1. I went to DOH infirmary yesterday for some lab exams. I got there at past eight and was entertained at past nine. Duh? Office hours start t 8am. The janitor told me "ma'am maaga pa naman." I replied "Maaga? Mag aalas nuebe na noh." Goodness my left arm is darkened and aching because the woman who drew blood for my CBC and ABO must not know how. I blurted that to the walls. I was saying "ouch, it hurts" when she pricked me with the needle. Out of the numerous CBCs I had, that was the first time I got hurt.

2. After that I proceeded to Jose R. Reyes Memorial Medical Center (JRRMMC), the flaghsip hospital of the DOH, for my neuro-psychiatric exam. I was told that it would be two months before I get the result because they lack psychiatrists and need to be scheduled and I am not their priority. They advised me to go to the National Center for Mental Health which is in Mandaluyong. I got mine at a PGH accredited psychiatrist. NCMH is so far and fare is expensive.

3. For drug test I went to the NBI At the entrance I was only told that the Chemistry is at the second floor. At the entrance I was told to get an ID at a certain department. Then they asked me to get a visitors slip at the entrance. I went at the entrance and they were not issuing such but rather another department beside the ID releasing. I went there and requested that they put a flowchart at the main gate so that people would not get confused. I then had my slip, then my ID. I went to the Chemistry and they instructed me to get a form in front of the office releasing the ID. You could imagine how tired am I. On top of that the rooms have no name and number which are instantly visible and the NBI building is large...Then I have to pay at the third floor before I will be given a container back at the second floor.

At least PGH and the Philippine Tuberculosis Society (PTS, where I had my chest x-ray) did a good job.

Singles Weekend Retreat I: Emotions

I could not say no. There were four household heads forcing me to attend. Hahaha. My hh head and three others. They were "blackmailing" me, telling me that I can absent myself from one French class because this weekend would be more than worthy, that this is a one in a lifetime event, that they would also be paying at the risk of being unpaid for their jobs, Blah blah blah. So there I said yes two Thursdays ago.

But all these days I was telling him to attend to. He needs it. I know he has financial problems. That is my cue. Hahaha. Anyway I am not alone in paying for him...I have my own angels, our friends.

The retreat was not the usual one. We were filled with talks. Imagine Talks 1-5 were on Saturday alone. Talks 6 and 7 on Sunday. I will not discuss them for the sake of the others who would be joining too, as this is a surprise and filled with a lot of emotions: both happy and sad.

Saturday night, we had a Lord's day. There should be cheering and a presentation of the talks 1-4. Best supporting actor and actress went to mansanas. The best actress was in dalandan and best actor in Papaya. Our saging team won the cheering. Papaya won the presentation.

I had this feeling to complain about the food but I was able to control myself. hehehe.

Jail is no place for a child

A booth was positioned at the front door of the St. Jude Parish last night. It was manned by UNICEF volunteers. Only a few people bothered to inquire.

Their cause is little: children.

To help fund for this UNICEF project, make a donation at the 31st floor of the RCBC Plaza, Ayala Avenue, Makati City. Credit cards are also accepted. Call them at (632)758-1000. Visit their website. Email is manila@unicef.org.

Cinemanila Fiasco

Since last month, aside from advertisements that were being shown on the television about the 7th Cinemanila International Film Festival, there have been also banners, streamers, and posters. This is the first time that I have been aware. Being a film enthusiast, I am more than elated at this, having the recent Cine Europa at the Shang for free.

However, until now, the opening of the festival, there are still no schedules of the film showing. I called SM Manila and was told that films are subject to change without prior notice. This is also what Cinemanila says. I believe this is a failure of the organizers. They should have fixed this prior to this date, and they sure advertised for this well. What a pity.

My Father, the Hero

From the Book of Sirach chapter 3:
1 Hear me your father, O children, and do thereafter, that ye may be safe.
2 For the Lord hath given the father honour over the children, and hath confirmed the authority of the mother over the sons.
3 Whoso honoureth his father maketh an atonement for his sins:
4 And he that honoureth his mother is as one that layeth up treasure.
5 Whoso honoureth his father shall have joy of his own children; and when he maketh his prayer, he shall be heard.
6 He that honoureth his father shall have a long life; and he that is obedient unto the Lord shall be a comfort to his mother.
7 He that feareth the Lord will honour his father, and will do service unto his parents, as to his masters.
8 Honour thy father and mother both in word and deed, that a blessing may come upon thee from them.
9 For the blessing of the father establisheth the houses of children; but the curse of the mother rooteth out foundations.
10 Glory not in the dishonour of thy father; for thy father's dishonour is no glory unto thee.
11 For the glory of a man is from the honour of his father; and a mother in dishonour is a reproach to the children.
12 My son, help thy father in his age, and grieve him not as long as he liveth.
13 And if his understanding fail, have patience with him; and despise him not when thou art in thy full strength.
14 For the relieving of thy father shall not be forgotten: and instead of sins it shall be added to build thee up.
15 In the day of thine affliction it shall be remembered; thy sins also shall melt away, as the ice in the fair warm weather.
16 He that forsaketh his father is as a blasphemer; and he that angereth his mother is cursed: of God.
17 My son, go on with thy business in meekness; so shalt thou be beloved of him that is approved.

He rarely used his hands to discipline us but we know when when we are wrong by the way of his speaking. He never sleeps until we get home. He has high hopes for himself and us, and keeps pushing us to attain it. He hates it when we point to his mistakes yet never repeats them. He takes all the criticisms whether good or bad, whether true or lies, with patience and understanding, yet never trusts those people again. He is diligent in teaching our lessons even if my sister pokes him with pens. He makes other people's papers without asking for something in return, yet reprimands them. He may be boastful but definitely because he has something to be proud of. He may criticize the church because one parish priest said that money is not important but we know that the priest is so darn wrong. Should I say that he is the best cook in the world? We do not use any artificial flavorings. He said that he wants to make sure that what we are eating are safe and hygienic. We may have misunderstandings, mostly due to his pride. His attitude may be not perfect but we cannot ask for more. In fact we regard him as the best. There are more stories and anecdotes in the family that telling them all in one time will lead to a lack of time and memory.

To my Tatay, happy birthday!

Contemplation and Reflection

Why signs do not work for me:

Lingon lingon.
Wala pa sya.
Papa God gusto nyo ba akong mag________?
Lingon lingon.
Wala pa din.
Papa God talagang gusto nyong sa ________ na ako?

Natapos ang naunang misa.

Lingon lingon.
Nge nandoon sya.
Papa God ayaw mo ba akong mag________?

A few days later I was reflecting on the scene. I would be leaving the community if I work there. Sure there is another chapter for me. But I have been there and now I do not know anyone. I know that there time is not on time. Bleeeh. And a lot more. Then He seemed to say who are you serving me or the community? It hit me. Three days passed and I realized that the sign I asked for was not really right. It meant depriving my friend from his presence in the mass. How evil of me. Or that I was just going there because of him which is not true.

Scriptures. The gospels for that week have given me the right sign, even the homily. The word of God can never go wrong and I am more than happy that He works in ways we do not perceive.

Now I am just completing my requirements. I hope rationalization do not take effect immediately because my license will be available next month.

Unprofessional and Unregulated

The license for nutritionist-dietitians is good for three years. Mine expired last July during my birthday. Therefore I went to the Professional Regulation Commission yesterday so that I can renew it. All that was needed was cash, the old license, and a picture with the name tag. I think they are really making those photoshops earn because who would reuse a picture with a name tag? Anyway they believe in security. The Civil Service Commission also has that. One picture should be pasted in the application form. Lo and behold! There was no paste in sight. Why? Because they are also making money from pastes...Before one can just see them anywhere, like in the post office. They were selling the pastes at PHP3.00 and they are small too, you know like those chinese pastes. In reality we can buy them outside at PHP1 only. I filled up my form and fell in line at Window 16. I waited for more than an hour just to have my requirements checked. Then at Window 15 I paid the cashier PHP480 because the surcharge was PHP30. To my surprise and utter dismay, I had to go back to Window 16 so that the person at the counter can check the claim slip which was attached to the form. Duh? I had to spend another more than an hour in the line! A lot of people were really complaining but I guess the PRC employees do not heed that anymore because they hear that everyday and every hour. Why cannot they add another counter? Come to think of it there is no information counter inside the building They have one upon entering the gate and that is all. One lady really had an audible voice and even said that we are paying taxes and we should be served better. True. We are not merely taxpayers but also we are paying these fees for our licenses. Why cannot they implement a systematized flow? The lines were already converging. The area is not conducive for waiting-it was not well ventilated and we had to stand for almost three hours. If they say that has been the way it has been done then they are dumb! On raising the fees they easily approve but with serving the people better they cannot.
